It is an interesting statement on our society that we are at once both repelled and drawn to the serial killer.

Perhaps, and going beyond simple curiosity, the attraction is deeply rooted in our own sense of apprehension as to what it is within these fellow human beings that drives them into the abyss of abhorrent behavior and heinous acts of violence.

After all are not each and everyone of us part of the same human race, which means that while there are distinct differences there are nonetheless enduring similarities that through the right combination of circumstances could unleash within all of us a beast of unimaginable depravity.

McHale, A Psychotic Break on Criminal Minds Season 3, Epsiode 10

Certainly the popularity of movies such as Silence of the Lambs and Manhunter, along with television series’ such as Criminal Minds speaks to an underlying fascination that represents more than a mere passing interest. One where we are seeking to understand rather than simply viewing the events of an unfolding story.

Like Jonny McHale from the season three Criminal Minds episode True Night, who after watching his girlfriend being brutally assaulted and killed moments after she told him that she was pregnant was “sliced across the stomach and left for dead” only to survive and embark on a violent killing spree against the perpetrators, one can barely imagine how we would react in similar circumstances.

Certainly this was the sentiment wistfully expressed by SSA Emily Prentis on the flight back to BAU headquarters when she openly wondered “are we all capable of becoming something like that?” She was of course referring to Jonny McHale.

Through this lens of empathetic repulsion, Pat’s Gallery of Killers will provide you with an inside look into the hearts and minds of the serial killer.
